My first year in comms at Blakeney

It is just over a year since I joined Blakeney. I had quit my job as a plumber to go to university and start a new career in comms. A lot has happened since then: I have learnt and grown so much and been promoted twice. I’m now looking forward to the year ahead and have even bigger ambitions for 2023.

I joined Blakeney on a communications internship programme which was a great introduction to the industry. I learnt from the most senior and experienced people in the business and gained the skills to kick-start my career. At the end of my internship, I was thrilled to be shortlisted for PRCA’s Best Intern award and offered a full-time role at Blakeney.

Since then, I’ve helped the team deliver exciting communications and public affairs strategies for a host of interesting clients, including industry leaders, challenger brands, and start-ups. This involved supporting a climate initiative tackle methane emissions to fight climate change, and advising a major UK energy supplier during a global energy crisis and formidable political headwinds.

I've had the opportunity to grow my understanding of communications so much in just over a year. There is a genuine focus on personal development at Blakeney and this is clearly reflected in my progression. Coming into the company with little previous experience, I’ve benefited from a personal development plan and had one-to-one training sessions with Blakeney’s public affairs and media specialists.

Blakeney is truly a great place to work. It’s filled with fun and friendly people who are great at what they do. Everyone looks out for each other and there’s a progressive approach to work-life balance. We’re also regularly treated to after-work socials and company events like darts and ice skating (even though I was hopeless at both).

I started the New Year as a Senior Account Executive and have big ambitions for 2023. I’m looking forward to continuing my career in comms and am incredibly lucky to do it at Blakeney. The team is entering an exciting period of growth, and with a number of openings, I would encourage anyone considering applying to do so!
