Public debate about nuclear – and large infrastructure more broadly – was dominated by delays and spiralling costs. High-profile setbacks like HS2 had eroded political and public confidence, leaving every new proposal judged through the shadow of past failures. Adding to the challenge, the new Labour Government had appointed a Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero who had historically been sceptical of nuclear, while also grappling with tight public finances. Securing government backing for Sizewell C looked far from certain.
To overcome this, we built a two-strand approach. Firstly, we planned to reframe the national narrative, and position Sizewell C as essential to energy security, net zero, and job creation, shifting the focus away from cost concerns. Secondly, we identified a spokesperson that could spearhead our campaign. As Joint Managing Director, Julia Pyke became a trusted commentator on energy, infrastructure and employment, bringing authority and credibility to the debate.
For seven months, our editorial team ran a daily media operation. We tracked political briefings, industry reports, and sector events, ensuring Sizewell was always ready to respond with sharp, timely commentary. Alongside this rapid response, we pushed proactive stories: securing interviews, placing op-eds, and highlighting Sizewell’s role in ending the reliance on foreign energy while creating thousands of jobs. Over time, Julia Pyke emerged as a respected national voice, and Sizewell C gained a consistent positive media presence.
In July 2025, after months of campaigning, the Government committed £38bn for Sizewell C, the single largest investment in clean energy in UK history. The announcement generated widespread positive coverage across BBC, ITV, Sky, the Financial Times, The Guardian, The Independent, Mail Online, Reuters, and trade media. Blakeney’s campaign reframed the conversation, strengthened local and national support, and helped unlock financial backing, proving the power of communications to deliver real-world impact.
Blakeney is now supporting Sizewell through the next stage of its journey: keeping public support strong and ensuring the project’s benefits to the UK remain front and centre.
